In November 2022, the non-profit organization Culture For Causes Network (C4C) launched the “Nature and Culture” program, based on two fundamental convictions. Firstly, humanity’s reconciliation with itself and with the living world is imperative. Secondly, culture is a powerful vector for achieving this, thanks to its ability to evoke emotions and propose new narratives.
This program has taken shape through three major initiatives, organized with the support of UNESCO:
- Production of the “Reconciliation with the living” exhibition: This exhibition brings together a selection of international artists committed to the environmental cause. Initially presented at UNESCO headquarters in November 2022, on the occasion of Earth University, the exhibition was then hosted in Europe and the Middle East in 2023 and 2024.
- Theming MuseumWeek 2023 and 2024: These editions of International Museum Week focused on environmental themes, promoting the dissemination of cultural digital content to the general public. The aim was to raise awareness among a wide audience through inspiring and informative publications from participating museums.
- Deployment of a committed digital art space: During the 42ᵉ UNESCO General Conference, a space dedicated to digital art on the theme of biodiversity was set up. This space also included the presentation of a series of three videos entitled “Nature and Culture”, co-produced by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, UNESCO, and C4C, offering an immersive perspective on the link between art and nature.
Other actions include a panel discussion on financing culture and the green economy, a round table on the environmental issues raised by NFT and blockchain, and a large number of interviews with environmental artists on MuseumWeek Magazine.
These actions illustrate C4C’s desire to touch people’s hearts and minds to facilitate a profound transformation in their relationship with nature, and encourage the adoption of more sustainable, environmentally-friendly behaviors.
This global initiative resonates with UNESCO’s ongoing efforts to integrate culture into sustainable development policies. Indeed, UNESCO advocates culture as both a driver and a facilitator of sustainable development, recognizing that cultural heritage, creative industries and cultural diversity are key resources for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Last but not least, cultural organizations play a crucial role in the deployment of this program, particularly during MuseumWeek.
2024-2025
To realize this vision and continue the implementation of this program, C4C is calling on cultural organizations around the world to join the Nature and Culture program. C4C proposes to support these organizations by facilitating partnerships, sharing resources and providing a platform for the dissemination of their projects. Together, we reinforce the essential role of culture as a catalyst for change towards more sustainable societies that respect the living world.
