Organization

Culture For Causes Network is a French nonprofit association. It is led by three people; hundreds more are involved — through the MuseumWeek community, volunteering, donations, or subscriptions. These connections are real and distinct. This page explains who decides, how the association is funded, and where you stand.

Culture For Causes Network

Governance Circle

Decides and holds statutory responsibilities.

International Council

Advises and embodies the network. No decision-making power.

MuseumWeek

MuseumWeek Members

Community attached to the brand. This status does not confer any statutory rights within the association.

In addition to these two groups, there are links that each person freely establishes — volunteering, donation, purchase of a service. They depend on neither: one can make a donation without ever having participated in MuseumWeek. The section “Where do you stand?” lists them one by one.

The governance circle

This is the core of the association: the president, the vice president, the founding member, and the other roles provided for in the bylaws. These are the people who decide and are accountable—legally, financially, to partners as well as to the administration.

The circle is small, and this is deliberate. An association organizing exhibitions in four countries and cooperating with UNESCO must be able to decide quickly; expanding the decision-makers’ circle would slow everything down without making anyone more accountable. The trade-off for this flexibility is that the opinion comes from elsewhere — from the International Council, community members, partner institutions. Deciding with a few requires listening widely.

These same people are the members of the association in the statutory sense: gathered in a general assembly, they approve the accounts. The decision-making circle and the membership overlap — and this is what gives meaning to the rest of this page.

The International Council

Body in the process of being created

International figures, selected for their experience and knowledge of the sector, gathered to illuminate directions without deciding them. Their role is to report what the governance circle cannot see from Paris.

Its composition is being formed; names will be announced soon.

Its members may make a donation to the association. The donation is neither a condition of entry nor a consideration — precision matters, because a council that requires payment to join no longer advises, it buys influence.

The MuseumWeek community

MuseumWeek is the international week of museums, launched in 2014 and organized annually with the support of UNESCO since 2016. The professionals and institutions participating are the MuseumWeek Members: it is the brand’s community, by far the largest circle — several hundred people in about a hundred countries.

This is where the word Network takes shape: Members organize themselves through Museum Voices. The International Council also contributes, through its experience and international reach — it is not the source.

This membership grants rights and access, notably on Museum Voices. It does not by itself make you a statutory member of the association: these are two different things, and this is intentional.

Without this separation, one would have to choose between opening governance to hundreds of people or closing the community. By distinguishing them, MuseumWeek can remain wide open while the association maintains governance that is self-accountable.

Where are you located?

  • You are participating in MuseumWeek You are a MuseumWeek Member. You belong to the brand community, with the associated access rights.
  • You give time You are a volunteer. You contribute to MuseumWeek, to a project, to network activities.
  • You Make a Donation You are a donor. Your donation funds the association’s activities, without receiving anything in return.
  • You pay for a service You are a client — of a Museum Voices plan, for example. It is a purchase, not a donation: the distinction has tax consequences, it is not merely formal.
  • You are invited to the Council You join the International Council. You are consulted, you provide guidance — and you do not bear responsibility for decisions.

These five statuses can be combined freely: one can be a Member, volunteer, donor, and client simultaneously. None automatically grants a voice in the association’s decisions — and that is precisely what allows all to be welcomed without ulterior motives.

Museum Voices, a service of the ecosystem

This is the tool through which MuseumWeek Members find each other, connect, and develop projects together: the place where the network is concretely organized.

Museum Voices can also offer services and commercial packages. Payment to Museum Voices is neither a membership fee nor a donation: it is the purchase of a service.

What the association lives on

Three sources. Philanthropy — foundations, companies, public institutions — funded the exhibitions and campaigns; the Supporters page lists them all, with their dates and what they enabled. Individual donations. And services from Museum Voices, whose paid options cover the actual costs of the service.

No advertising, no resale of data. Museum Voices relies on neither, and this is a constraint we impose on ourselves rather than a selling point: it closes off a source of revenue that most platforms use.

The accounts are approved at the general assembly by the governance circle, which is legally and financially responsible.
