A use case of AI serving the digitization of stolen objects was also detailed.
Museums for Repair: Recontextualizing Afro-Brazilian Sacred Heritage
Museums for Repair: Recontextualizing Afro-Brazilian Sacred Heritage How can museums restore the dignity of historically silenced and criminalized objects? This webinar explores the recontextualization of Afro-Brazilian collections, particularly through the emblematic case of the Nosso Sagrado Collection — religious goods confiscated by the police and now finding space on the walls of institutions such as the Museum of the Republic. Focusing on curatorial justice and heritage memory, we will discuss how museums and researchers work to recover narratives, preserve traditional knowledge, and build spaces of reconciliation through culture. An essential conversation for museum professionals, curators, and educators interested in colonial archaeology, collection restitution, and musealization of the sacred. Participants: Vinícius Zacarias — Professor of Museology (UNIRIO), specialist in Black heritage and Afro-American performance Marco Antonio Teobaldo — Museologist and curator, founder of the Brazilian Network of Terreiro Museology (Remuste) Domi Valansi — MuseumWeek Brazil / ArtRio Marcos Lima Moreira — MuseumWeek Brazil / Salesian Work Museum Part of the MuseumWeek 2026 program — Theme: "Intelligences, Museums, Futures"
AI and Heritage for Peace: Re-Imagining the Museum to deal with the Past
Three-hour webinar organized as part of UNESCO’s Heritage for Peace program, bringing together researchers, policymakers, and practitioners around a dual reality: how museums can respond to emerging digital threats — cyberattacks on inventories, deepfakes, political instrumentalization of art — while strengthening their role as actors of social cohesion and peace. Testimonies from Ukraine, Iran, Syria, the United Kingdom, and Germany.

The speaker shared lessons learned from this project, at the intersection of technology and heritage safeguarding.
African Museums in 2050: the digital future of heritage
Extension in live conversation of the in-depth interview with Mohamed Zoghlami published in MuseumWeek Magazine. The discussions focused on the plurality of “intelligences” in the edition’s theme, on the African Heroes game developed by Netinfo with UNESCO, on the biases of large language models when addressing the African continent, on digital restitution via the metaverse as a tool for cultural justice, and on the figure of the ideal African museum in ten years.
Bridging Heritage and AI: Deji Art Museum’s Roadmap for the Future

#MuseumWeek 2026
Thirteenth edition, dedicated to artificial intelligence — with an explicit stance: to question it rather than celebrate it. What does AI really do in museums, for their audiences, their professions, their mission? Eleven highlights online — six webinars with UNESCO, two keynotes with ICOM, three events produced by C4C, speakers from over twenty countries — open this space of doubt, even allowing critical voices on contested projects like the British Museum’s “The Living Museum.” The edition is based on the Museums & AI survey conducted in fall 2025 with 180 respondents in 35 countries: 46% of institutions surveyed use AI, and 11% do not know if it is the case in their institution — a blind spot that says much about uses spreading without framework or visibility for leadership. Where AI is adopted, it primarily serves audiences: accessibility and outreach. The 2026 ranking confirms, for the third consecutive year, the Regimiento de Granaderos a Caballo (Argentina) in first place, ahead of Museo Soumaya and Museo La Rodadora, both Mexican.
Museum Minds — interview series of the MuseumWeek Magazine
Original editorial program of the MuseumWeek Magazine for the 2026 edition: a series of written interviews giving voice to museum directors, researchers, artists, and international experts on what artificial intelligence, cultural sovereignty, memory, and innovation bring to the contemporary museum — a space for reflection distinct from the media time of the week's webinars. Published in French and English (bilingual for French-speaking speakers), the series includes eleven publications featuring the voices of nine personalities from six countries, including Karalyn Monteil (UNESCO), Sabrina Moura (Louvre Abu Dhabi), Ai Lin (Deji Art Museum, China), Mohamed Zoghlami (Africa Metaverse Museum), Agnès Callu (EHESS/CNRS, Grand Palais RMN Chair), Andrés Duprat (Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, Argentina), Yannick Lintz (Guimet Museum), and Jonathan Talmi (creator of The Living Museum).

Human remains, Heritage and Ethics
🏛 HUMAN REMAINS, HERITAGE AND ETHICS: What are the challenges for museum professionals? In French, English, and Spanish 📅 About the meeting: While the law passed in France on December 26, 2023, concerning the restitution of human remains of foreign individuals deceased after 1500 belonging to public collections, has recently enabled the return of 3 Sakalava skulls to Madagascar, we felt it was important to revisit this subject, which presents certain legal complexity coupled with strong ethical issues. The presence of human remains in the collections under our care entails our responsibility as museum professionals, in different fields of intervention, from documentation to public presentation, including conservation-restoration. It requires us to rethink the entire traditional heritage chain and to reconsider the meaning and ethics of ‘conservation,’ ‘study,’ ‘restoration,’ and ‘exhibition.’ On Tuesday, June 3, we will be questioning our professional practices to find the most respectful responses to the sensitivities of our audiences and the singularity of these ‘collections,’ whether identified or anonymous, if the term ‘collections’ can even be judiciously used Emilie Girard, chair of ICOM France, May 2025 📑 TERMS AND CONDITIONS - Tuesday, June 3, 2025 / 6 PM / 8:30 PM (CEST) - Public event, online and open to all - On digital platform only (Zoom) - Simultaneously translated into English, Spanish, and French with the support of the French Ministère de la Culture - Event organized in partnership with l’Ecole Du Louvre, Paris, as part of hashtag#MuseumWeek 2025 - Moderator: Aurélie Clemente Ruiz, director of the musée de l'Homme, Paris - Details of speakers soon
#MuseumWeek 2025
Edition dedicated to learning the commons — rethinking what connects us, between humans, machines, and nature. It gathers 17,500 unique authors in 80 countries, with 767,900 interactions and a potential reach of 11.9 billion. The Regimiento de Granaderos a Caballo (Argentina) remains at the top of the official ranking for the second consecutive year, ahead of Château de Chambord and Museo Soumaya in Mexico — confirming the shift started in 2022, and a complete reversal of the 2021 podium, where Chambord led ahead of Versailles and the Granaderos were third. The official artwork is an untitled canvas from the “Time Goes By” series by Franco-American artist Carole Jury.

Under the theme of social impact innovation, it brings together 18,300 unique authors, 103,000 mentions, 634,400 interactions, and 13.9 billion potential reach. Two shifts mark it. The first is geographic: Latin America enters the global ranking strongly — Argentina moves up to 3rd (6th the previous year), Mexico 4th, Brazil 6th (9th), Chile 7th. The second is technical, and even more brutal: participation on Twitter drops from 98.6% in 2021 to 55.4%, benefiting Instagram which captures 43.2%. Finally, the hashtag #sexualityMW alone accounts for 21% of exchanges — a theme the team notes "would have been impossible to propose a few years earlier." Chambord Castle leads the most engaging institutions, ahead of the Pompeii Archaeological Park and the Japanese Yamatane Museum.

Museums worldwide reenact works from their collections from the homes of their teams and audiences: the Palazzo Reale in Naples, the Musei Reali in Turin, the National Gallery in London, the Guggenheim, the Granaderos a Caballo Museum in Buenos Aires — which adapts the hashtag in Spanish, #CulturaEnCuarentenaMW. The most engaging post of the entire 2020 edition, across all theme days, is actually from this hashtag: the Château de Versailles account published a photo of a dog dressed as Louis XIV, facing the king’s portrait by Hyacinthe Rigaud — 19,900 likes and 479 comments on Instagram.

#MuseumWeek 2020
Pandemic edition. “Togetherness” had been chosen as the theme at the start of the year; the health crisis gave it a whole new meaning. While nearly half of humanity was confined, the team decided to keep the dates and rewrite the seven hashtags to reflect the situation — from healthcare workers (#heroesMW) to artworks replayed from the living room (#CultureInQuarantineMW), including museum memories (#MuseumMomentsMW) and dreams (#dreamsMW). They were translated into Croatian, Chinese, Spanish, French, Greek, Italian, Portuguese, and Russian. Europa Nostra joined UNESCO among the supporters; the agencies mtArt, Buffer, and Talkwalker provided the tools. The report measured by Talkwalker counted 65,196 participants (+4.9% over 2019), 217,100 hashtag mentions (+18%), 2.4 million interactions (+364%), and 24.4 billion potential reach (+234%) — the strongest growth in the history of the operation, led by Europe (Italy 19.9%, Spain 17.6%, France 16.8%, United States 11.3%, United Kingdom 8.5%). Among the most engaging institutions: Château de Chambord, Château de Versailles, Auschwitz Memorial, Pompeii Archaeological Park, and the Granaderos a Caballo de Buenos Aires — a collection mixing, in the midst of the pandemic, playful heritage and serious memory. 715 citations in online media were recorded, from Euronews to Paris Match. This was the edition where MuseumWeek stopped being a supplement to museum life to become, for a few days, the only open place.

#MuseumWeek 2018
Fifth edition, moved to April — the only schedule change in the history of the event, which will then take place in May and finally in June. It adds nature to the already established themes of heritage and women in culture, anticipating by five years the “Nature and Culture” program. The official report counts 5,001 participants in 120 countries, an increase of 11% in registrations and 26% in countries represented compared to 2017; Europe accounts for 53% of participation, ahead of North America (28%) and Asia (10%). The most represented countries are the United States (944), France (613), the United Kingdom (600), Italy (478), Canada (333), Spain (338), Russia (218), and Germany (199). This is the year the association submitted its application to the CHANEL Foundation, whose support begins with this edition and will continue in 2019. The poster bears the UNESCO logo, a partner since 2016. However, the exact measurement of the conversation is distorted by the abrupt restriction, in April 2018, of access to Instagram’s API following the Cambridge Analytica affair.
#WomenMW 2018 — women in art and culture
For the second year, #MuseumWeek dedicates its hashtag #WomenMW to women in art and culture, with the support of the CHANEL Foundation. The theme for Monday, April 23 invites institutions to highlight women from History, Art, Culture, or Science — “not women represented for their beauty, but women artists, women intellectuals, women workers.” On the #MuseumWeek website, the Women in Culture series publishes eleven new portraits of professionals in the sector — five in English, five in Chinese, one in French, fewer than planned due to Instagram API restrictions — including Hu Xinyun (China Academy of Art), Olga Kudinova, Marilia Bonas (Memorial da Resistência de São Paulo), and Mrinalini Venkateswaran (City Palace Museum of Jaipur). The CHANEL Foundation sets four measurable goals for the campaign, including a floor of 180,000 messages exchanged under #womenMW — a volume that Instagram API restrictions prevented from being measured. Two other goals are verified: 54% of people participating in the global conversation are women, and thirty-four press coverages are recorded.

The meeting takes place on #musicMW day, Wednesday, June 21, and continues under #WomenMW. The hashtag report from June 20 to July 10, 2017, counts 37 posts, including 12 on June 21 alone, 12,266 likes, and 922 comments — an average of 331 likes per post.
#WomenMW — the 2017 edition dedicated to women
The fourth edition of #MuseumWeek is dedicated — not devoted, as the official report points out — to all the women of the world: in addition to the seven daily hashtags, institutions are invited to publish throughout the week on the theme “Women and Culture” with the hashtag #WomenMW, presented in Chinese (#女性博物馆周#), Korean (#여성MW), and Japanese (#女性MW). A pre-campaign “Hack our logo” invites community managers of institutions to creatively alter the #MuseumWeek graphic identity in tribute to women. The result exceeds expectations: 577,815 messages exchanged around #WomenMW, representing 33% of the overall conversation of the edition — 20,932 posts, shared 548,297 times and commented on 8,586 times. Meanwhile, the #MuseumWeek website publishes a series of portraits of women in the cultural sector under the name Women in Culture: 18 in English, 8 in French, 7 in Chinese (for 17 people interviewed), and 2 in Russian. The emblem chosen for the campaign is Artemisia Gentileschi’s self-portrait as a lute player. The edition gathers 4,505 cultural institutions in 95 countries; more than 1.7 million messages are exchanged during June.

#MuseumWeek 2017
Fourth edition, and first year of the Women In Culture program, under the hashtag #WomenMW — also in Chinese, Korean, and Japanese. The official report counts 4,505 participants in 95 countries, a 28.5% increase in registrations compared to 2016; over 81,000 posts were exchanged, shared 1.6 million times, and commented on more than 43,000 times, for a total conversational volume of 1.7 million messages — up 161.5% year-on-year. #storiesMW had the highest engagement of the seven daily hashtags, despite being posted on a Thursday. The emblem of #WomenMW is Artemisia Gentileschi’s self-portrait as a lute player. This is also the year Culture For Causes Network was created, in April: from this edition onward, the operation is led by an association rather than an informal steering committee. Three Instagrammer meetups took place in Paris — at the Opéra Comique, the Palais de la Découverte, and the Philharmonie — each with its own hashtag.
Origami challenge — fold the #MuseumWeek logo
Tutorial published on museum-week.org by Chabadie to fold the M of #MuseumWeek — or the W of #WomenMW — in origami, with a challenge to institutions and audiences to share their creations. Promoted throughout the month before the edition, notably by French museums.
#WomenMW Tribute Challenge — repurpose the logo for women in culture
Creative challenge launched eleven days before the 2017 edition: to repurpose the MuseumWeek logo to pay tribute to a woman artist and share it with the hashtag #WomenMW. Dozens of institutions responded — Le Signe National Center for Graphic Design, Museu de la Vida Rural, Kvindemuseet, Accorsi-Ometto Museum, Museu de Ciències Naturals de Barcelona — and the campaign led to a dedicated Twitter Moment followed by a replay on June 26. A visual narrative of the contributions was published on the first day of the edition.

A donated campaign that brings a festival previously confined to social networks out into the streets.

#MuseumWeek 2016
Third edition, focused on the preservation and celebration of culture, memory, and heritage, but also on tolerance, living together, and freedom of expression — explicitly in response to the Paris attacks, the Bardo Museum attack, the devastation of Palmyra, Nimrud, and Hatra, and the looting of the Mosul Museum. The official report counts 3,500 institutions registered in 75 countries across 4 continents, a 24% increase in registrations compared to 2015; thirteen accounts with over one million followers participated, compared to eight the previous year. The eight combined hashtags total more than 664,000 tweets, seen 294 million times — a 16% increase year over year. #ArchitectureMW has the highest volume (92,053 tweets), followed by #LoveMW and #HeritageMW. Twitter sponsors two hashtags (#ZoomMW, #LoveMW) as promoted trends in France and for the first time transforms its Twitter emoji into a picture frame for all official hashtags. This is the pivotal year of the partnership with UNESCO, which will continue: Irina Bokova, its Director-General, sends a letter of support for the operation. JCDecaux offers the same week its network of over one hundred digital panels in Paris — the first time MuseumWeek steps out of social networks to occupy the streets. Two influencer campaigns accompany the edition: #GuestMW, private museum visits by personalities, and a tour of seventeen Vine and Instagram creators through six Parisian monuments. The poster is a view of Earth taken by the European Space Agency.
Vine and Instagram creators tour across Paris
In partnership with the agencies Niche and Vine, seventeen digital creators from France, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Spain are invited on a tour of six iconic Parisian monuments — Eiffel Tower, Louvre Museum, Centre Pompidou, Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie, Panthéon, Arc de Triomphe — moved from place to place in a van branded with #MuseumWeek colors. The tour produces one hundred nineteen pieces of content, including sixty Vines, totaling nine million cumulative views. Operation budget: €30,000.

Tweet-up #poseMW at the Royal Ontario Museum
On the last day of #MuseumWeek 2015, the Royal Ontario Museum brought together 25 influencers in its galleries for a day of selfies and creative poses around the day’s theme, #poseMW. The museum had previously engaged its own staff around the theme — one third of its employees were then active on Twitter.
Time capsule, digital artwork, and giant hashtag of #MuseumWeek 2015
Three new installations accompany the second edition. A time capsule — 60 × 30 × 28.6 cm, 30 kilos, made of acrylic, glass, carbon fiber, and metal — was sealed on March 29, 2015 at midnight to preserve all tweets from the event; entrusted to the Cité des sciences et de l’industrie, it is not to be opened until 2035. Meanwhile, the BRIGHT studio and artist-developer Marcin Ignac produced a generative digital artwork based on Twitter data from each museum (geolocation, founding date, profile photo colors, conversational activity): exhibited at the Cité de l’architecture & du patrimoine, it is also shareable by each institution on its own website. Finally, a giant #MuseumWeek hashtag — six meters long, fifty-seven centimeters high — circulated all week on iconic Parisian sites; placed at the foot of the grand staircase of the Petit Palais, a matching prop — the Twitter bird in volume, wearing a hat — served as a photocall during the March 5 press conference.
#MuseumWeek 2015
Second edition, launched on March 5 at the Ministry of Culture in the presence of Fleur Pellerin and Dick Costolo, then CEO of Twitter. Announced to 1,000 institutions in 44 countries, it ultimately gathered 2,825, for 640,000 tweets and 237 million impressions — four times more participants than in 2014. Two new features accompany it: a time capsule preserving all tweets, entrusted to the Cité des sciences et de l’industrie, and a digital artwork generated from these tweets by the BRIGHT studio and artist Marcin Ignac. The French poster carries the promise of the edition: “Museums reveal themselves on Twitter.”
Preparation webinar for #MuseumWeek 2015
Two consecutive sessions, 2:00-3:00 PM then 3:00-4:00 PM GMT, open to cultural institutions wishing to prepare their participation in the 2015 edition. Announced by Mar Dixon, co-organizer of the campaign, and relayed by the MuseumWeek account.
Press conference launching #MuseumWeek 2015
Press conference launching the second edition of #MuseumWeek, Thursday, March 5, 2015, at 5:00 PM, in the Salon des Maréchaux of the Ministry of Culture and Communication, in the presence of Minister Fleur Pellerin and Dick Costolo, then CEO of Twitter. Benjamin Benita, edition coordinator, presents the 7 days, 7 themes, and 7 hashtags of the event as well as its governance: a steering committee of French museum professionals, supported by Mar Dixon and backed by Twitter and the ministry — including notably Élise Maillard (Louvre Museum) and Claire Gayet (Cité de l’architecture & du patrimoine). Announced figures: 1,000 institutions registered in 44 countries, compared to nearly 700 European institutions and more than 260,000 tweets for the first edition, born in France in 2014 from the commitment of twelve major museums. Two new initiatives are unveiled: a time capsule preserving all tweets of the event, entrusted to the Cité des sciences et de l’industrie, and a digital artwork generated from these tweets by the BRIGHT studio and artist Marcin Ignac, destined for the Cité de l’architecture & du patrimoine.
